Savoie, France
zesty, precise, mineral
The grape jha-KEHR,
used to make this shee-NYON from Charles go-NAY, is local to
SAV-waugh. Savoie is in Alpine eastern France, on the northern Italian
border. You will find aromas and flavors of zesty citrus fruit and
minerals, but what is great about this wine is its crisp, plentiful
acidity. Some cool-climate Rieslings and Chenin Blancs are called
"lasers" for this acidic quality, and this Jacquere is in that vein.
The winemaker's notes say that it is "slightly
feezy," which I think means that a fresh bottle might have have a slight
sparkling taste to it. No oak or malo on this one, and just 11.5%
alcohol - this is a light, easy-drinking, but very distinct wine whose
palate-cleansing quality will pair it with a wide variety of dishes.
The mineral and citrus flavors show best maybe 10
degrees above fridge temp, so unless it is a very hot day, I would not
use a wet ice bucket. Just ice or nothing at all is best.
