'11 Esporão Monte Velho 8/28
Alentejo, Portugal
soft, orange zest, refreshing

This is a pleasant, refeshing, light to medium-bodied white that you can drink with a variety of foods. I taste mostly stone fruit flavors from it, and a little bitter aroma of orange zest. It's made from three local grapes: Antão Vaz, Roupeiro, and Perrum. The Antão Vaz has some malo on it, which accounts for some of the smoothness on the palate. Although it's from Portugal, your guests who like California wines will probably want this one.

Portugal's prestigious wines come from the Douro, in the north of the country. One reason this wine is a good value is that it's instead from the Alentejo, in the south. Besides wine, cork-oak ("sobreiro") has been hand-harvested here for 300 years, and the cork industry employs about 60,000 people here as of 2008.
