Piemonte, Italy
blackberry, spice, tangy
This Dolcetto has a dense and complex aroma. It's hard to pick out the individual smells, but tar, spices, and blackberries would be good guesses. It's only medium-bodied on the palate, but comes right at you with firm tannins, black fruit, and spice. Don't drink this with spicy food. There's good acidity after the bite of tannin, and it finishes kind of tangy, with a certain pleasantly bitter flavor. Dana thinks it's oak, I think it's bay leaves.
Dolcetto has a recent history of being fashioned into big, intense wines, perhaps for American audiences, but this is certainly an example of the "classic" style: medium-bodied, with acidity, and not going to wreck your palate. That said, the aromatics and flavors are complex, and it's fun to try and identify them.
